They reported watching a solid object which, they said, was not a helicopter and not an aeroplane. The only time recorded is 5.35 in the morning, attached to a reference to being in the bathroom. That is close to the whole of it.
What is on the record
This is one of the thinner files in the archive and it has a specific problem worth naming. The transcript carrying the Thomases' own account is largely corrupted, which is why the summary of it runs to a few lines rather than a narrative. The detail that would let a reader judge the case is simply gone.
The second telling attached to this canonical does not describe the same event. It reports numerous residents and police officers seeing football-shaped blinking lights that changed colour, and a police department taking thirty to forty calls about them. The department is named as Trussville, a name that does not belong to Birmingham in the West Midlands. Two of the archive's five claimants for this case, Louise Lee and Roger Kohler, belong to that other account rather than to the Thomases'. The claimant list is not clean, and the two tellings should not be read as corroborating one another.
