Cookie policy
1. What cookies are, and the rules
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. Sites can also use your browser's local storage, which works in a similar way. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, a site needs your consent before storing anything on your device, unless it is strictly necessary for a service you have asked for.
2. Strictly necessary, and features you ask for
These are set only to make something you asked for work, so they do not need consent.
| NAME | TYPE | WHAT IT DOES | HOW LONG |
|---|---|---|---|
| fr_session | Cookie, first party | Keeps you signed in after you join or sign in. Signed, and not readable by scripts on the page. | 30 days, or until you sign out |
| fr_bp | Cookie, first party | Remembers that you turned on Big Picture mode, so the page opens in it. | 1 year, set only if you use Big Picture |
| fr.consent.v1 | Local storage | Remembers your analytics choice, so we do not ask again. | Until you clear it or change your choice |
| fr.geo.country.v1 | Local storage | Remembers your country code, so we know whether to ask for consent first. | Until you clear it |
| fr.research, fr.seen, fr.follows, fr.board, fr.app.* and similar | Local storage | Your research list, what you have read, followed cases, your investigation board, and display preferences such as the sidebar, the tier lens and the Atlas filters. For signed-in members these are also saved to your account so they follow you between devices. | Until you clear them |
3. Analytics cookies, only with your consent
If you choose Accept, Google Analytics sets the cookies below to count visits and understand how the archive is used. If you choose Reject, or make no choice, they are never set. Visitors outside the UK, EU and Switzerland are not shown the banner and analytics runs by default; you can still switch it off below.
| NAME | PROVIDER | WHAT IT DOES | HOW LONG |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one visitor from another with a random identifier. | 2 years |
| _ga_<ID> | Google Analytics | Keeps track of the current visit. | 2 years |
See our privacy policy for what analytics records and how long Google keeps it (14 months).
4. Other sites
Case videos load YouTube's player only when you press play, in its privacy-enhanced mode. Once a video plays, YouTube may store data in your browser under Google's own policy. Case photographs load from Wikimedia Commons, which may set its own cookies under the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy; it does not use them for advertising.
5. Changing your choice
Allow or refuse analytics here at any time. Refusing switches analytics off and deletes the analytics cookies already set; the change applies from the next page you open.
You can also block or delete cookies and site data in your browser's settings. If you block the sign-in cookie you will not be able to stay signed in. Questions: contact@contact.fracturedrealities.co.
