The Hollow Ship of 1803
1803 story · late Edo copy · Hitachi coast · Japan

WHAT IT IS
A round vessel with glass windows washes ashore with a foreign woman inside, carrying a box no one may touch, under writing no one can read.
THE ALIEN READING
Ufologists call it Japan's flying-saucer legend: a domed craft, an occupant and unknown script, recorded in the Edo period. It reads as a landing and a close encounter.
WHAT THE RECORD SAYS
Folklorists treat it as legend. Yanagita Kunio traced older 'hollow boat' tales, Kazuo Tanaka found eleven documents that disagree with each other, and Hideki Satō identified the 'alien' glyphs as European alchemical signs.
WHERE IT STANDS
Disputed. What it shows, or how old it is, is still argued over by specialists.
