The Cylinder at 9,000 Feet

On 1 March 1945 reconnaissance pilots of the 107th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron reported an aluminium-coloured cylinder hanging upright in the air at 9,000 feet with fins and a mast at its lower end. When it was attacked it partly deflated and gave a smokeless red flame, but it did not break up. The squadron's photographs failed. This is the record of what the pilots reported, not a verdict on what hung over the front.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Cylinder at 9,000 Feet is a reported UAP case in Map reference F-5710, European theatre (IX Tactical Air Command area), 1 March 1945, 10:30.
  • Reconnaissance pilots reported an aluminium-coloured cylinder about 12 feet long hanging upright at 9,000 feet with small fins and a mast at its lower end.
  • The signal says the object was attacked and partially deflated, a red flame resulted without smoke, and the cylinder did not disintegrate.
  • A pilot of the 107th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron photographed it, but IX Tactical Air Command reported that the photos were unsuccessful.
  • The released file offers no explanation and gives the location only as an undecodable map reference, F-5710.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

It seemed to hang upright in the sky, suspended from nothing. At 10:30 on 1 March 1945, pilots of the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group reported "an aluminum colored cylinder shaped object, about 12 ft long and 1 ft in diameter", floating at 9,000 feet. Small fins and a mast projected from its lower end. The signal that carried their report is brief. "The object was attacked and partially deflated, a red flame resulted without smoke. The cylinder did not disintegrate." A pilot of the 107th Squadron photographed it near map reference F-5710.

What is on the record

The report survives in SHAEF Air Staff file 37153, released by the Department of War on 8 May 2026. Headquarters IX Tactical Air Command sent it to SHAEF the same day under General Quesada's name. On 4 March the Air Staff passed it to the Air Ministry and the Allied air forces and asked for the photographs and a full written report from the pilots. Quesada answered the next day that the photos "were unsuccessful" and that a written report would follow. It is not in the released file. A SHAEF memo of 14 March closed the matter: the pictures of "Long cylindrical objects" claimed by the squadron's pilot "proved to be unsuccessful".

The file gives no place name. F-5710 is a grid reference without the zone letters needed to fix it, so the page is not pinned. Press coverage of the release has said intelligence judged the cylinder a German "flak bomb". The file's only mention of a "Flak Bombe" answers a different report, two weeks before this one. No explanation of the cylinder appears. Its fins, its mast and the word "deflated" are the record's own details, and they read like a balloon-borne device, but the file never says so. The same folder holds the night fighters' foo fighter reports, which belong to a separate page.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The observers are pilots of a named squadron on operations, with no individual named. No independent testimony sits beside the signals in the archive, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What the pilots attacked at 9,000 feet is not resolved here.
