The Ring of Fire over Abidjan (1952)

Shortly after 01.30 on 3 October 1952 three members of a family in Abidjan watched a light stop in the sky and spin in a ring of fire. It zig-zagged upward and changed shape and colour for half an hour before it shrank, turned green and vanished. The account comes from an Ivory Coast newspaper that the CIA collected and translated. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over Abidjan.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Ring of Fire over Abidjan (1952) is a reported UAP case in Abidjan, Ivory Coast (then French West Africa), Ivory Coast, 3 October 1952, about 01:30-02:00.
  • Three members of a family in Abidjan said a light stopped in the sky and revolved about itself in a ring of fire, zig-zagging upward, on 3 October 1952.
  • As it moved it took on flat, round and oval shapes and its colour ran from purple to gold, the newspaper account says.
  • After many rapid, noiseless turns it dwindled, turned green and disappeared at about 02.00.
  • The only source is an Ivory Coast newspaper item the CIA translated, and the family is not named.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

It began with a bright green flash from the east, like the exhaust of some craft. Shortly after 01.30 on 3 October 1952 three members of a family in Abidjan saw the light cross the sky and then stop dead. Motionless, it looked orange-red. Then it began to revolve about itself "in a ring of fire", zig-zagging upward while staying in the same part of the sky. As it moved it took on different shapes, flat, round and oval, and its colour ran from purple to gold. It made many rapid turns without a sound. At about 02.00 it dwindled in size, turned green and disappeared. The newspaper added that the three observers "gave the impression of being quite level-headed."

What is on the record

The source is a single newspaper item. La Côte d'Ivoire, published in Abidjan, ran it on 8 October 1952 under the heading "Give details on mysterious object flying over Ivory Coast". The CIA translated it into report OO-W-24639, a digest of saucer stories from the Spanish, North African and South African press distributed in November 1952 and marked "unevaluated information". It is a foreign press report the CIA collected, not a CIA investigation.

That is the whole file. The family is not named. The item gives no street or district. The original French article was not found online, and the one modern retelling we found cites another copy of the same CIA report. No explanation is offered anywhere in the record.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. One translated newspaper item carries the case and names nobody, so the archive holds no identified witness and no primary document. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What the family watched over Abidjan is not resolved here.
