The Alamogordo Mothership

At sunset on 10 October 1958 four people at Alamogordo in New Mexico watched a long cigar-shaped object through binoculars until it turned black and vanished, and a later retelling turned it into a mothership launching smaller craft. The only outside account of the sighting records that it was afterwards identified as the sunlit contrail of a jet returning to Holloman. This is the record of what was reported and how it was explained, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

A gigantic cigar hung over the mountains west of Alamogordo, according to the archive's tellings, flashing brilliant yellow and discharging small dark objects while jets took off towards it. The control tower would not answer its phone. Four people watched through binoculars from about nine miles away. They were Coral Lorenzen and her husband Jim with John and Norma Romero.

The archive's rows give the date as 3 October or leave it open. The record we checked places the sighting on 10 October 1958 a few minutes before six in the evening. The tellings also name the range as the San Andreas Mountains, which is a slip for the San Andres.

What is on the record

Outside documentation is limited to one source. The sighting was published through APRO, which cited the Alamogordo Daily News of 11 October 1958. That account is plainer than the archive's. It describes a long object tilted at about thirty degrees in the sunset with bands of shadow and bright spots along its body, which then turned black and vanished. Holloman Air Force Base reported only an L-17 and a B-26 in the air.

The mothership belongs to a later retelling. The discharged objects, the scrambling jets and the silent tower all come from Frank Edwards and are not in the APRO account.

The same account carries an identification. It records that the object was afterwards identified as the short sunlit contrail of an F-106A returning to Holloman at sunset, flown by Don Humphreys, with the aircraft's beacon as the blinking light. That is the standard explanation on file and it is a specific one.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3, the archive's tier for multiple independent claimants describing one connected event. It rests on two videos from a single channel and three resolved claimants. One of those entries, Cora Lawrence, is a mishearing of Coral Lorenzen, and the Romeros are counted as one couple. The tier measures who reported the sighting and does not weigh the contrail finding against them. The record holds four named witnesses and a named aircraft. What they watched is not resolved here beyond that identification.
