Apollo 8's lights
In December 1968 the Apollo 8 crew, on their final orbit and minutes from losing contact behind the Moon, remarked on a strange light on the surface below and joked about campfires. Later tellings attached a saucer, a suppressed film and a "Santa Claus" line to the same mission. This is the record of what was said on the tape and what was claimed afterwards, not a verdict on what was on the surface.
◆ THE SHORT VERSION
- Apollo 8's lights is a reported UAP case on the Moon, 24 December 1968.
- On their final orbit, minutes before losing contact behind the Moon, the Apollo 8 crew remarked on a strange light on the surface below and discussed whether it was a bonfire or campfires; on the onboard transcript at 088:44 Anders says 'There's a strange light down there.'
- One telling has a man who overheard unedited Houston transmissions describing a saucer-like craft with portals and moving beings that paralleled the crew's course, took photographs and departed, after which he was told 'You did not hear anything.'
- Another account has a source claiming to have seen an uncut Frank Borman film of six objects descending onto the lunar surface; no public record of such a film has been found.
- The 'Houston, there is a Santa Claus' line is real but belongs to Lovell on Christmas morning, not to Wally Schirra as one telling has it.
- The tellings say the transcript was withheld until around 2022; it has in fact been public in the Apollo Flight Journal for years, and nobody on the loop pursued the light.
- For this case Fractured Realities holds 2 distinct sources and 5 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
- The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.
Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.
