The Beltway Missing Hour

On 14 August 1983 two women driving the I-695 west of Baltimore said they lost about an hour and were turned off their usual route, then found a domed craft with windows hovering low near their home. Outside the archive the case rests on a single bulletin report. This is the record of what they reported, not a verdict on what hovered over the house.

Somewhere on the I-695 west of Baltimore on 14 August 1983, two women lost about an hour they could never account for. The catalogues that carry the case say they were detoured off their usual route without knowing how or why. Back near home they saw a round domed craft with slat-like windows hovering low over the house. The archive's telling puts it about sixty feet up. The catalogue version gives about fifty.

That telling names the women as Colleen and Cindy Drogelis. It adds that their car used an unusual amount of petrol on the drive and that both wanted only to forget what had happened. It also records a strange after-effect. The insomnia both had suffered before the night simply stopped.

What is on the record

A single telling on one channel carries the case into the archive, and it yields two claimants: the two women. Beyond it the case appears in more than one catalogue of encounter reports. Every listing leads back to the same article, in the APRO Bulletin of January 1984. We found no police report and no newspaper story. No official body took an interest and nobody has put forward a standard explanation.

The outside record differs from our telling in two places. The catalogues describe two women and do not say they were mother and daughter, as our telling does. They also say nothing about the extra fuel. Both details reach the archive only through the later retelling, and a reader should weigh them as that source's additions.

Why it sits where it does

The case grades L3, the archive's tier for multiple independent claimants describing one connected event. Here that means two people in one car, told through one later account that rests on one bulletin report. A second witness in the passenger seat counts for something. But the women were together the whole time, and their story reached print by a single route. What they met on the road home is not resolved here.
