The Smoke Trail over Barcelona (1952)

On 21 May 1952 the journalist Valentín García watched a rocket-shaped object race over Barcelona from the direction of El Prat airport, trailing smoke from two points; over Badalona it stopped smoking, vanished and reappeared kilometres further on. Both airports denied knowledge of it. His newspaper account survives because the CIA collected and translated it. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what crossed the city.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Smoke Trail over Barcelona (1952) is a reported UAP case in Barcelona (seen from José Antonio Avenue, heading from the direction of El Prat towards Badalona), Spain, 21 May 1952.
  • Journalist Valentín García said a rocket-shaped object trailing smoke from two points stopped smoking over Badalona, vanished for a few seconds and reappeared several kilometres further on.
  • He put it about 2,000 metres up, flying fast from the direction of El Prat airport in a straight line, and neither Prat nor Sabadell airport admitted any knowledge of it.
  • His newspaper's telephones were soon ringing with calls from people who had seen it, he wrote.
  • A photograph of the smoke trail credited to Francisco Andreu is captioned 17 May, four days before the date of García's report, as the CIA's compiler noted.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Valentín García was crossing José Antonio Avenue on his way to the newspaper office when he saw it. "A strange object flying at high speed from the direction of Prat Airport, about 2,000 meters above ground, and leaving a wide smoke trail." It did not look like an aircraft. Unlike the flying saucers in the papers it flew in a straight line, with no flashes of light and no spin. To him it seemed rocket-shaped. The smoke came from two points close together and merged into one streak. Over Badalona, about ten kilometres away, the trail stopped. The object disappeared for a few seconds and reappeared several kilometres further on, smoking again. His colleagues at the office saw the smoke but not the object. Soon the paper's telephones were ringing with calls from people who had seen it.

What is on the record

The account is García's own, printed in the Tangier daily España on 22 May 1952. The CIA translated it into a digest of foreign newspaper items headed "Flying saucers in Spain and North Africa", report 00-W-23759, distributed on 27 August 1952 and marked unevaluated. It is a newspaper story the agency collected, not a CIA investigation. The same digest carries sightings from Tunisia and Morocco that are separate events.

Neither Prat nor Sabadell airport admitted any knowledge of the object, García wrote. A friend took a picture of the smoke trail. The CIA's compiler described it as a diagonal stripe of diminishing width, lighter than the sky, above the dark bulk of a building cornice. The photograph is credited to Francisco Andreu. The compiler also noticed that its caption says it was taken "on 17 May", four days before the report's date. The picture itself is not in the release. We found no other contemporary account of the sighting.

Why it sits where it does

L0: a single document. García is named, but his account is journalism rather than a government record, and no second telling sits beside it in the archive. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth, and no explanation is on file. What trailed smoke over Barcelona is not resolved here.
