The Berwyn Mountain Incident

On the night of 23 January 1974 an earthquake and an explosion shook the Berwyn Mountains of North Wales while witnesses reported green lights arcing over the hills and a pulsating orange object on the mountainside. Searchers found no wreckage and the night became the "Welsh Roswell". This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was on the mountain.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Berwyn Mountain Incident is a reported UAP case in the UK, 23 January 1974.
  • The record describes a crash retrieval, a police witness, an object hovering and a fast-moving object.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 3 distinct sources, 1 corroborating primary document and 12 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · DOC-CORROBORATED — the testimony is corroborated by primary government documents, the top of our scale.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

On the night of 23 January 1974 a 3.5-magnitude earthquake and an explosion shook the Berwyn range in North Wales. Witnesses reported arcing green lights and a pulsating orange, egg-shaped object on the mountainside. Police and astronomers searched the slopes and found no wreckage. The night acquired the nickname the "Welsh Roswell", and later claims alleged a crashed craft and alien bodies removed to Porton Down.

What is on the record

The archive resolves twelve claimants across three videos and two channels. Pat Evans is among those named for the lights and the object on the mountainside. A separate telling belongs to Geraint Edwards, a retired gamekeeper, who described a red rugby-ball-shaped object with pointed ends hovering sixty to a hundred feet above the mountain for at least ten minutes before it shot off "like lightning".

Paperwork carries the other half of the case. One government primary document sits in the file, drawn from the UK Ministry of Defence UFO files held at the National Archives, and the other items from the same series are classed as reporting. What that paper preserves is the contemporary record of the tremor, the lights and the searches. The crash-retrieval elaborations arrive later and thinner: one retelling calls the crash rumoured and notes that Pope, reviewing the historical files, found nothing convincing in them.

Why it sits where it does

Berwyn grades L4, witness plus primary document, at the official-record evidence grade. The grade speaks to how the reports are sourced, not to the truth of the crash story, which nothing in the file supports. What the record firmly holds is that an earthquake and lights were widely reported over the Berwyns that night, that police and astronomers searched and found nothing, and that the Ministry of Defence kept paper on it. Whether anything beyond that occurred on the mountain is not resolved here.
