The Da Nhan Black Sphere

One account holds that in August 1968 a party of five Soviet hydrologists near the village of Da Nhan in Vietnam found a three-metre black sphere in the field, and that four of them walked into the dark towards it and were not seen again. The fifth is said to have shot himself in the leg to stop himself following. This is the record of the account, not a verdict on what stood in that field.

The account opens two days before the central night. A party of Soviet hydrologists working near the village of Da Nhan reported seeing a diamond-shaped object struck by a fiery projectile, with a shockwave that followed. Two days later, on 12 or 13 August 1968, they are said to have found a sphere about three metres across sitting on the ground, black and reflecting nothing. The five men were ordered to guard it. Through the night they went towards it one at a time, described in the telling as drawn rather than choosing to go, until only Boris Ivanov remained. He is said to have fired a round into his own leg to break the compulsion. By morning the sphere had gone and so had the other four.

What is on the record

The archive resolves five claimants and every one of them is named inside the same telling. That telling comes from a single channel and a single video, and it is the whole of the file. There are no documents.

The witness list needs reading carefully. Four of the five men are the ones the account says vanished, so they cannot be sources for anything that happened after they walked off. Whatever survives of the night traces back through Ivanov alone, and the archive does not hold his testimony directly. The other names are partial in the file, given as Vyacheslav, Vladimir, Pyotr K. and Sergei T., which is not the form a documented roster would take.

The place is thin as well. It is recorded as near the village of Da Nhan in Lapthash province. The archive has no independent fix on either name.

Why it sits where it does

The entry carries an L3 label because five claimants are attached to one connected event. The label overstates it. One channel, one video, one telling and no documentation is a single-account record by any practical reading, and it describes four deaths or disappearances that nothing in the file corroborates. What happened near Da Nhan is not resolved here, and the archive should be read as holding the story rather than the event.
