The Light That Followed Dr Beyers (1953)

Before dawn on 26 May 1953 Dr D. Beyers, driving from Cape Town to Upington, watched a yellowish-green light "ten times as bright" as any star rise every time he stopped his car, and had the impression it was following him. He reported it to the Department of Defence in Pretoria, which did not make it public. His story reached the CIA through an Afrikaans newspaper. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was in the sky that morning.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Light That Followed Dr Beyers (1953) is a reported UAP case in Cape Town–Upington road, about 80 miles south of Brandvlei (between Calvinia and Brandvlei), Northern Cape, South Africa, 26 May 1953, about 05.10–06.00.
  • Dr D. Beyers said a yellowish-green light seemed to follow his car, rising every time he stopped to watch it.
  • He described it as ten times as bright as any star he had seen, with three fixed streaks of light and a glow like burning hydrogen.
  • He reported the sighting to the Department of Defence in Pretoria, which acknowledged it but did not make it public, according to Die Landstem.
  • The Outspan's telling adds that he woke a road worker near Brandvlei to show him the light.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

"I was under the impression that the object was following me because each time I stopped the car to watch it, it increased its altitude." Dr D. Beyers of Upington was driving home from Cape Town and had reached a point about 80 miles south of Brandvlei. At about 5.10 in the morning he saw a bright yellowish-green light behind the clouds. It came out from behind them. It was ten times as bright as any star he had seen, and its light looked like burning hydrogen. It moved up and down and sometimes forward. Three streaks of light stood out from it and held their place around the main light. He watched until 6.00.

What is on the record

The Cape Town Afrikaans paper Die Landstem printed the story on 28 November 1953 under the headline "Flying saucer follows man". It said the paper had not been able to publish the full account before. Beyers had reported the sighting to the Department of Defence in Pretoria, which acknowledged it but kept it private. The CIA translated the item into a digest of foreign newspaper sightings, report 00-W-29903, distributed on 20 April 1954 and marked unevaluated. The archive holds two scans of that report. It is a newspaper story the agency collected, not a CIA investigation.

A second telling appeared in The Outspan magazine on 1 January 1954, in David Marais's article "Are We Being Watched?". It puts the start nearer 4.50 a.m. and the sighting at an hour and ten minutes. It says that near Brandvlei Beyers woke a road worker at a road camp and showed him the light. It names the officer he reported to as Commandant Gilroy King of North-west Cape Command. Neither account offers an explanation.

The record's geography is loose. It places him "between Kenhardt and Calvinia", but Brandvlei itself lies between those towns, so a point 80 miles south of it is on the Calvinia stretch of the road. The map pin is an approximate point on that road.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. The archive's two documents are scans of the same CIA digest, so they count as one source. The Outspan telling is not among its holdings. Beyers is named, but the record is a newspaper story rather than an official report, so it does not reach the document tier. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What rose over the road that morning is not resolved here.
