The Caja de Muertos Helicopter Encounter

A Puerto Rico police air unit sent to investigate a light off Caja de Muertos reported finding a large hovering object, and that their helicopter was held motionless for several minutes with its engines running. The crew describe being sent for psychiatric assessment afterwards. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what held the aircraft.

FURA is the air and maritime unit of the Puerto Rico Police, and the account places one of its helicopters over the water south of Ponce, near the island of Caja de Muertos, after a report of a light. What the crew describe finding was not a light but a large hovering object that made what they characterised as instant jumps between positions.

What is on the record

One telling on one channel, three claimant entries covering the captain, other FURA personnel and a gunman aboard, and no documents. The grade is testimony.

The central claim is mechanical and specific. The crew report that the helicopter was held motionless in the air for two or three minutes while its engines ran normally. That is a precise thing to assert about an aircraft, and it is the sort of claim that flight records, maintenance logs or a unit incident report would speak to. None of that is in our archive.

The aftermath is the second strand and it is what makes the file uncomfortable. The crew describe being harassed, sent for psychiatric evaluation and grounded for six months. Institutional consequences of that kind are in principle documented events. Their absence from our holdings is a gap worth naming rather than a detail to lean on.

The dating is loose, recorded only as the 1990s, and Puerto Rico produced a heavy concentration of reports through that decade.

Why it sits where it does

L3 on three claimants to one connected event, carried by a single channel, with the witnesses being serving police aircrew. What the helicopter met off Caja de Muertos is not resolved here.
