The Callao Approach Sighting

On an ILS approach into Lima a Peruvian airline crew reported a yellow oval object holding at their altitude a few miles off, with air traffic control confirming no other traffic. Residents of Callao are described as photographing objects the same night. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what stood off the approach path.

The aircraft was on an instrument approach into Lima at five thousand feet, in clear weather, late in the evening. The captain is described as an experienced pilot with some fifteen thousand hours. What he and the co-pilot and the flight engineer reported was a yellow oval object holding at their own altitude roughly five miles to the south-west. It did not glare.

What is on the record

One telling on one channel, four claimant entries covering the three crew and residents of Callao, and no documents. The grade is testimony.

Two elements give the account structure beyond a crew sighting. Air traffic control is described as confirming no other traffic in that position, which is a specific operational check rather than an impression. The sighting is also placed alongside reports from the ground. Callao residents are described photographing objects, reports appearing in Lima newspapers, and navy vessels using reflectors to try to locate them.

That ground activity is the most checkable material in the file and none of it is in our archive. No photograph, no newspaper page and no naval log is in our holdings, so a case that in principle has a substantial public trail reaches us as a single telling.

The dating is loose, recorded only as the 1990s with a time of night.

Why it sits where it does

L3 on four claimants to one connected event, through a single channel, with an experienced flight crew as the primary witnesses. What held station off the approach into Lima is not resolved here.
