The Petare Roadside Encounter

In the early hours of 28 November 1954 two men driving through Petare, on the eastern edge of Caracas, reported a glowing craft over the road, an engine that died beneath it, and small figures that attacked them. A doctor on a night call said he watched it happen. This is the record of what the men reported and who corroborated it, not a verdict on what was on that street.

Gustavo González and José Ponce were driving through Petare, a district on the eastern outskirts of Caracas, in the early hours of 28 November 1954. According to the account the archive holds they came upon a glowing craft hovering over the street ahead of them. The engine and lights died. Small manlike creatures were reported to have attacked the two men. One of them stabbed at a creature and said the knife glanced away as though it had struck rock. They made for a police station, where the account records that they were taken for drunks.

What is on the record

Three claimants are resolved. Two are González and Ponce themselves; the archive's telling calls them vegetable truck drivers, while the contemporary accounts describe González as a businessman travelling with his assistant in a van. The third is the detail that gives the file more weight than a roadside story usually carries: a doctor, out on a night call, who said he had witnessed the whole event and corroborated what the two men reported. The archive's telling styles him an obstetrician; the documented accounts leave him an unnamed physician. A third party with a professional reputation, present independently and saying the same thing, is a materially different situation from two frightened men at a police desk.

The case was reported in the Caracas press within the day and taken up by investigators in the years after, which is more than most encounters of its kind can say. The archive holds the account and none of that paperwork.

The dismissal at the police station is part of the record too, and it belongs in the file rather than being smoothed away.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3, the archive's tier for multiple independent claimants describing one connected event. The corroborating doctor is what lifts it there. No government file supports it in our holdings, so it cannot go higher. What the two men met on that road is not resolved here.
