The Conde Sphere

On the night of 8 November 1963 a Rio de Janeiro radio station reported that a large metal sphere had fallen in the centre of Conde, in Bahia, Brazil, with a human body inside wearing heavy clothing marked with undecipherable inscriptions. The report reached the US space council and the State Department. The US consul in Salvador found the story "apparently fabricated in Rio", and reporters who rushed to Conde found no one who had seen any object. This is the record of a report and its investigation, not of an event.

A large metal sphere fell in the centre of Conde and gouged a hole four metres deep. It had window-shaped openings covered with thick glass. Inside was "a human body dressed in heavy clothing bearing inscriptions which cannot be deciphered". So said Rádio Tupi of Rio de Janeiro at 23.30 on 8 November 1963, as transcribed by the US Foreign Broadcast Information Service. "The population of Conde is intrigued, and the authorities have been informed."

What is on the record

Three released records follow the story. The broadcast transcript, EOP-UAP-D001, sits in the files of the National Aeronautics and Space Council with a handwritten note that appears to call it "a curious report". By 14 November the story had changed shape. An embassy telegram to the consulate in Salvador, DOS-UAP-D001, describes a "large metal manned balloon" found near Salvador with a dead crewman "wearing uniform or spacesuit with strange markings". It asks the consul to confirm his "unqualified negative". It also records that an object seen aloft had been tentatively identified as a weather-type balloon, but "no repeat no such object had been found aground". The telegram was passed to Defense and NASA.

Airgram A-628 of 20 November, DOS-UAP-D002, carries Consul Harold Midkiff's reply: "Story of strange object descending in region of Conde Bahia apparently fabricated in Rio no such objects seen by anyone in the area according to newspaper reporters and others who rushed there". Bahia's Secretary of Public Security had guessed at a weather balloon, but no such sighting was verified. Midkiff sent two Salvador clippings. One reports that the Ministry of Aeronautics "categorically denies" any strange object in Conde. The other ran under the headline "The Airship that wasn't there". The airgram's subject line misdates the sighting to 1964, while everything else in the record is 1963.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L2. Three government records carry it, but none holds a witness. The broadcast cites unnamed reports, and the consul found no one who had seen anything. No independent testimony sits in the archive. A tier measures sourcing, never truth, and here the official record is the debunking. The consul's finding is that nothing came down at Conde, and the archive holds no source that says otherwise.
