The Council Bluffs Encounter

In January 1980 a car of women leaving a bridge party near Council Bluffs in Iowa reported red and white lights, and a separate driver said her car stalled repeatedly by a brilliant orange light in a cornfield, that she blacked out, and that she woke with a fever and skin blotches. This is a different night from the city's better-known 1977 molten-metal case. This is the record of two reports from one night.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Council Bluffs Encounter is a reported UAP case on County Road G66 / Longview Loop, Council Bluffs, 11 February 1980.

The location is County Road G66 at Longview Loop, near Council Bluffs in Iowa, on a night in January 1980; the contemporary investigation gives the date as the twenty-first. Council Bluffs also has a well-known case from December 1977 involving molten metal in a park, and this is not it. According to the account the archive holds, six women driving home from a bridge party saw red and white lights. A separate driver, recorded as Susan, had a different night. Her car stalled repeatedly near a brilliant orange light in a cornfield. She blacked out. She came round with the car sideways in the road and a temperature of 102 degrees. Red blotches on her skin matched the areas which had been exposed. Roughly thirty minutes were unaccounted for.

What is on the record

Five claimants are resolved. They include Marilyn Anderson and Rita Sobecki, whose surname the contemporary record spells Sobetski, a nun, other members of the bridge party, and Susan under a pseudonym. A nun among the witnesses is the kind of detail that shaped how such reports were received at the time. Susan's anonymity is the ordinary cost of these accounts and it limits what can be checked about her; the fever reading and her name do not appear in the published investigation, which does record the fever and the blotching.

The two halves of this file are separate observations rather than one shared event. The bridge party saw lights. Susan reported the close encounter, the blackout and the after-effects, and she reported them alone. Her account is the substantial one and it is the one with the fewest supporting witnesses.

The after-effects are the most testable element. A fever and patterned skin reddening confined to exposed areas is a clinical presentation, and a doctor seeing that patient would have made notes. The archive holds no medical record. The site sits about 76 kilometres from the nearest reactor, which the archive records as a distance and nothing more.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3, the archive's tier for multiple independent claimants describing one connected event. What stalled the car is not resolved here.
