The Exeter Incident

One night in 1965 a teenager and two police officers near Exeter, New Hampshire reported a huge silent object with brilliant red lights moving low over the fields. This is the record of what they described, not a verdict on what they saw.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Exeter Incident is a reported UAP case in the USA, 3 September 1965.
  • Teenager Norman Muscarello said an object 85 to 90 feet across, with five red lights pulsing in sequence, came at him over a field near Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1965.
  • Exeter police officers Eugene Bertrand and David Hunt said they watched the silent object rise from behind a tree line and approach at treetop level, tilting as it moved and flooding the ground with red light.
  • Accounts of the 1965 Exeter sighting say horses kicked their stalls and dogs howled, and that six reports were filed that night.
  • The Air Force's Project Blue Book file lists the 1965 Exeter sighting as Unknown #9890 and names Muscarello, Bertrand and Hunt.
  • The Air Force first blamed the Exeter sighting on a low-flying advertising aircraft, an explanation accounts of the case describe as debunked and retracted.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 9 distinct sources, 2 corroborating primary documents and 11 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · DOC-CORROBORATED — the testimony is corroborated by primary government documents, the top of our scale.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

An object Norman Muscarello put at 85 to 90 feet across came at him over a field outside Exeter, five red lights pulsing in sequence. The teenager had been hitchhiking home. He hid, then flagged down a ride to the police. Officer Eugene Bertrand drove him back to the field and Officer David Hunt joined them there. Both policemen watched the object rise from behind the tree line and approach at treetop level, tilting as it moved, silent, flooding the ground with red light. Horses kicked their stalls and dogs howled. One telling adds that the Air Force later asked whether chickens had been affected, since their hearing range differs from ours.

The night had begun earlier. A large family reported a brilliant blood-red fireball over the fields around 10pm. About half an hour before Muscarello's report, Bertrand found a frightened woman parked alone, saying an egg-shaped object ringed in red glow had chased her car. He dismissed it and did not take her name. Six reports were filed that night.

What is on the record

The archive resolves eleven claimants across nine videos, all on one channel. Most are named, from Muscarello and the two officers to residents such as Mrs Pierce and Meredith Bolduc. Three entries are not single named people: a young Navy man, an unnamed family and several other people who reported lights, each counted once.

Four document sources sit behind the tellings. The weightiest is the Air Force's Project Blue Book case file, which lists Exeter as Unknown #9890 and names Muscarello, Bertrand and Hunt. It carries the teenager's report of five very bright red lights in a line over a house, and a second paper in the file records Bertrand's earlier stop at the parked car. The Condon Committee's report notes the sightings as the basis of Fuller's book. A UK Ministry of Defence file and a CIA file count as reporting.

The Air Force first blamed a low-flying aircraft from an advertising operation, an explanation the tellings describe as debunked and retracted. One account has Muscarello told to keep quiet and the officers' reputations smeared. NICAP investigated at the time and John Fuller reinvestigated for his book Incident at Exeter.

A later telling widens the frame. Callers Mrs Pierce and Fred Gale describe repeated sightings of silent oval objects hovering eight to ten feet up and pacing cars, and one attempt to photograph them failed. Gale ties those encounters to the Muscarello case. The same telling claims over a hundred local witnesses, which is not an archive count.

Why it sits where it does

Exeter grades L4, the tier for named witnesses plus an official record: the three central witnesses are named in a Blue Book file the Air Force classed as unknown. The video sourcing is still one channel, thinner than the case's fame suggests, and the tier speaks to sourcing rather than truth. A civilian and two police officers described the same low object at close range on the same night. What they saw is not resolved here.
