The Face on Mars
On 25 July 1976 the Viking 1 orbiter photographed a mesa in the Cydonia region of Mars that looked, in that frame and that light, like a face. The picture became the founding image of the idea that Mars carries ruins. This is the record of what was photographed and claimed, not a verdict on what stands in Cydonia.
◆ THE SHORT VERSION
- The Face on Mars is a reported UAP case at The Face, Cydonia on Mars, 1976.
- One analyst's account has an eyeball in the eye cavity of the mile-long mesa and, after three-dimensional processing, teeth in its mouth.
- The tellings hold that the Face and the pyramid-like hills beside it are the ruins of a civilisation, and one physicist reads them as the wreckage of a thermonuclear event.
- The telling's complaint about the 1998 re-image is that NASA threw most of the data away and enhanced what was left into a grainy picture that could prove nothing.
- NASA called it a trick of light and shadow on the day the 1976 frame was released, and every later camera has returned the same answer.
- For this case Fractured Realities holds 3 distinct sources and 5 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
- The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.
Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.
