The Golden Saucer at Gahanna

On the night of 1 July 1948 a woman in Gahanna, Ohio, saw "a beautiful golden saucer glowing like a halo with a silver rim around it" cross the sky in about three seconds. A father and son from Columbus who were with her saw a bright yellow-white light on the same path. J. Allen Hynek judged it probably a bright, slow-moving meteor. This is the record of what they reported, not a verdict on what crossed the sky over Gahanna.

Mrs Howard Enslow called it "a beautiful golden saucer glowing like a halo with a silver rim around it". It crossed from north-east to south-west on the night of 1 July 1948, some time between nine and ten o'clock, and was gone in about three seconds. She was at home in Gahanna, Ohio, with her husband and the Taylor family of Columbus. When an Air Force officer questioned her nine days later she was "very vague", his report says, "and appeared to attribute the phenomena to holy visitations".

What is on the record

Project SIGN filed the sighting as Incidents 140 and 140a. The Department of War has released it in the incident summaries of its first PURSUE release on 8 May 2026 and again in DOW-UAP-D088 on 12 June 2026. First Lieutenant Clarence Glasebrook visited the Enslow home on 10 July with an agent of the 109th Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment. Jack Taylor, 23, had three years' service and was then in the National Guard. He gave the fullest account: "a bright yellow-white light" moving at "a terrific rate of speed" at three to four thousand feet. It was "a glow and not a directed light". It lasted about two seconds and "didn't fade but ceased abruptly". It made no sound, and nothing but the light was seen. His father Chester Taylor told the same story. Mrs Taylor apparently did not see it.

Glasebrook went to the spot. He found that a grove of trees may have cut off the witnesses' view, which could explain why the sighting was so short. The Project Blue Book case file adds J. Allen Hynek's evaluation: "The object sighted here was probably a bright, slow-moving meteor." He also noted that the witnesses reported bright moonlight when, at the stated hour, the moon had not yet risen.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Three named witnesses describe one light, though only Mrs Enslow gave it a shape. No independent testimony or press report sits beside the file in the archive. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. What crossed the sky over Gahanna is not resolved here.
