Gemini 11's object

In September 1966 Pete Conrad and Richard Gordon reported and photographed a bright object flying alongside Gemini 11. NORAD named it a Soviet satellite and the Condon Report accepted that, while noting the photographs showed more than a point of light. This is the record of what was reported and photographed, not a verdict on what flew wing on the spacecraft.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • Gemini 11's object is a reported UAP case in Earth orbit, 1966.
  • Pete Conrad reported a large object tumbling at about one revolution a second and flying wing on Gemini 11 in September 1966, and the crew photographed it three times.
  • One telling says an object flew over the ship an hour after the tether experiment, drained battery stack C, and was followed by a gap in the transcript; another says the flight photographed a saucer with a top cap.
  • NORAD identified the object as Proton 3, a Soviet satellite in decaying orbit, and the Condon Report accepted that while noting the photos showed more than a point of light.
  • The archive has found no record of a battery drain, a transcript gap, a lithograph in NASA files or a spectrometry study.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 3 distinct sources, 1 corroborating primary document and 2 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · DOC-CORROBORATED — the testimony is corroborated by primary government documents, the top of our scale.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Gemini 11 flew in September 1966 with Pete Conrad and Richard Gordon. The archive's principal telling says the two men observed a cluster of large and very bright objects alongside their craft. A second telling places the event about an hour after the tether experiment: an object flew over the ship and drained battery stack C, and a gap follows in the transcript. That account adds that a lithograph mock-up of the object was found in Simkinson's NASA files. A third telling says the flight photographed a definitive saucer-shaped craft with a top cap, documented in Ed Wilson's book with spectrometry showing no tampering.

What is on the record

The archive holds three videos from three channels, one telling each. It counts two claimants, Conrad and Gordon. The three tellings describe three rather different things: a cluster, a single draining object and a saucer.

One primary document sits in the file, the Condon Report's chapter on astronaut sightings. It quotes the flight transcript. Going into sunset, Conrad reports "a wingman flying wing on us": a large object tumbling at about one revolution a second and fairly close. The crew photographed it. It then quotes the ground's answer the next day. NORAD had identified the object as the Soviet satellite Proton III, more than 450 kilometres from Gemini 11, so the photographs were unlikely to show more than a point of light. The report's astronomer enlarged the frames and found considerably more than that. Four distinct objects appear at least a kilometre apart at NORAD's range. He read them as pieces of Proton III, possibly including its booster. The chapter confirms the sighting, the tumbling and the photographs. It also carries the satellite identification.

Outside the archive's holdings, James Oberg corresponded with both astronauts and records that they described a solid satellite-like body on a ballistic path. Neither source mentions a saucer, and the archive has found no record of a battery drain, a transcript gap, a lithograph or a spectrometry study.

Why it sits where it does

The case now grades L4, witness plus primary document, because the Condon chapter is a primary record that quotes the crew's own words. That record corroborates what they saw and photographed. It also carries NORAD's identification of it. Both claimants were on the same spacecraft, so the tier reads independence generously here. The explanation of record is a Soviet satellite, and the photographs are real. What the crew of Gemini 11 flew alongside is not resolved here.
