The Governor's Amber Light

In mid-October 1973 the sitting governor of Ohio told reporters that he and his wife had seen an amber light standing upright in the sky while driving home near Ann Arbor in Michigan. The story made the front pages within days. This is the record of what a governor said he saw, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

"I saw one the other night, so help me. I'm absolutely serious." The man saying it to reporters was John J. Gilligan, the sitting governor of Ohio. He and his wife Katie had been driving back to Ohio along a highway near Ann Arbor in Michigan when they saw an amber light standing upright in the sky. He insisted it was not a bird or a plane. The sighting fell on the evening of Monday 15 or Tuesday 16 October 1973, in the middle of a wave of reports, and was first reported on 17 October.

A serving state governor going on the record about a UFO was news in itself. He was invited onto the Dick Cavett Show.

What is on the record

Two claimants are resolved: John Gilligan and his wife Mary Kathryn Gilligan, known as Katie.

The archive's telling describes a vertically shaped amber object. The contemporary press described it as a vertical beam of light, and the shape of a craft is the archive's reading rather than the governor's own words. The coverage came at once. The Hamilton Journal News put the story on its front page on 17 October and the Columbus Citizen-Journal followed on 18 October. The archive also holds one document from the CIA's released UFO collection that touches the case. It is classed as reporting rather than as government record and does not add corroboration.

No investigation is known and no explanation was ever formally offered.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3 on the archive's count of claimants. The record behind it is two people in one car and a governor's public statement printed within days. The witness is unusually prominent and the description is slight. What the Gilligans watched from the highway is not resolved here.
