At about ten to five on the morning of 7 January 1978 a man was riding a moped through the countryside near Guébling when he saw three very bright lights "au ras du sol" (right down at ground level). One of them was very powerful. It broke away from the other two and came towards him. Then it followed him all the way to the entrance of the next village, where it disappeared. He heard no sound at any point.

What is on the record

GEIPAN is the unit of the French space agency CNES that investigates unidentified aerial phenomena. It holds the case as GUEBLING (57) 07.01.1978 and classes it D. Class D means GEIPAN looked into the case and could not explain it. The page rates it strange to very strange with medium to strong consistency.

The description runs to five sentences. It records one check: no helicopter had flown in that sector that night. It closes "Ce phénomène n'a pas été identifié" (this phenomenon has not been identified).

That is nearly all the file holds. The one testimony sheet records a man of 30 and codes the lights as three spheres, each bigger than a car and fast. There are no documents, sketch or investigation report. GEIPAN names no explanation it tested beyond the helicopter. The page does not say how far off the lights stood or how long the pursuit lasted. Nobody else is recorded as having seen them.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. GEIPAN withholds the identities of its witnesses, so the released record carries no identified witness. The tier measures sourcing, not the quality of the investigation. A class D verdict says the investigators ran out of explanations. It does not say something unusual was on the road. What followed the moped that morning is not resolved here.
