The Gulf Breeze Photographs

From November 1987 a resident of Gulf Breeze, Florida, produced a run of Polaroid photographs of a lit craft over the town, and other residents came forward with sightings and footage of their own. The pictures were disputed by analysts on both sides from the start. This is the record of what was photographed and claimed, not a verdict on what was over the town.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Gulf Breeze Photographs is a reported UAP case in the USA, 11 November 1987.
  • Ed Walters says a glowing craft with portholes came up to his house in Gulf Breeze, Florida, one of many he photographed from November 1987.
  • Walters says a buzzing craft hovering over a field near his home left the grass white and the soil unable to support growth for two years.
  • In Gulf Breeze an engineer named Mr Fuentes is said to have filmed an object holding position for twenty-three minutes before it accelerated at a claimed 4,000 miles an hour.
  • Dr Nathan judged the Gulf Breeze photographs likely double exposures and a hoax, while Bruce Maccabee called one low-to-ground image authentic.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 10 distinct sources and 11 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-CLAIMANT — several named claimants attest to it independently of each other.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Ed Walters says a glowing craft with portholes came up to his house, one of many he photographed over the following months. His tellings add entities, attacks on him and a buzzing craft hovering a few feet above a field near his home. The grass there turned white and the soil, he says, would not support growth for two years despite fertilising and reseeding. The first Polaroids of a lit craft above the town were taken on 11 November 1987. One telling holds that at least a dozen other people saw the object the same night, among them Art Hufford. A documentary in March 1988 presented the pictures as the work of an anonymous local contractor.

What is on the record

Ten videos on two channels give eleven claimant entries but not eleven witnesses. Two entries are groups, a local watching group and the two to three hundred residents one source says saw craft over several years. That figure is the source's claim, not the archive's count. "The man called Ed" is Walters again. Art Hufford and his wife describe a craft above the treetops as they drove home late one afternoon, a sighting that led him to join MUFON. Another telling puts him among the night's witnesses, so this may be one sighting or two.

Separate accounts describe a reflective sphere hovering silently before streaking out of frame. An engineer named Mr Fuentes filmed an object holding position for twenty-three minutes before it accelerated at a claimed 4,000 miles an hour. Bruce Morrison filmed a bright object crossing the Naval Air Station for nine minutes and dropping small white burning objects. Charlie and Doris Summerbee corroborated a night approach.

The photographs are contested inside the record itself. Dr Nathan judged them likely double exposures and a hoax. Bruce Maccabee reached the opposite conclusion and called one low-to-ground image authentic. Andrus defended the case using controlled camera tests with a sealed camera and a metal-pack Polaroid, arguing for an object roughly 2.8 feet long at 83 feet. Randles is described as remaining agnostic. A local woman called Betty saw Walters' original tape and landing marks in a schoolyard and believed him. Her interviewer found the watching group misidentifying planes, radio towers and car taillights. No government paperwork sits behind any of it.

Why it sits where it does

Gulf Breeze grades L3 on testimony from several claimants. With no primary documents it cannot reach the document-corroborated tier, and the tier settles nothing about the pictures either way. The file's dating runs loosely from 1980 to 1991 because its sources discuss a stretch of years. What the photographs show is not resolved here.
