The Light at Karaganda Airport

A 17-second phone video titled after a US intelligence report shows a luminous point near Karaganda International Airport in Kazakhstan, with trails of light fanning out from its centre. AARO dates it to February 2022 and says it was digitally altered before anyone uploaded it. This is the record of what the clip shows, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Light at Karaganda Airport is a reported UAP case in Vicinity of Karaganda (Sary-Arka) International Airport, Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan, February 2022.
  • A phone video titled after a US intelligence report shows, in AARO's words, a luminous phenomenon near Karaganda International Airport with trails of diminishing brightness extending from its centre.
  • AARO says the clip was digitally altered before it was uploaded to a classified network and is presented as received.
  • An outside analyst proposes a sunlit rocket plume, but no launch has been matched and the only Soyuz launch from Baikonur that month flew in mid-morning Karaganda time.

The video fades in from black on a glow low in a dark sky. AARO describes "a luminous phenomenon with trails of diminishing brightness extending from the center". The camera pans left and right and zooms in. At 13 seconds it fades to black again. The released poster frame shows a bright point with pale rays spreading upward and outward from it, above a flat dark foreground and two small red lights.

What is on the record

The only record is the video, DOW-UAP-PR072, published in the Department of War's second PURSUE release on 22 May 2026. Its title is the uploader's: "ADMINISTRATIVE REVISION: IIR 1777 J0032 22 Kazakhstan - UAP in the vicinity of Karaganda International Airport". An IIR is an intelligence information report, and that report has not been released. AARO judges the clip "likely derived from a commercially available cellular device's rear-facing camera in February 2022". It was uploaded to a classified network in April 2023. AARO adds that the media "was digitally altered prior to its upload" and is presented as received. It found the file in a collection whose chain of custody it calls unproven.

AARO offers no assessment. A contributor at Metabunk argues for a rocket plume lit by sunlight high above a dark landscape. Snopes traced a similar 2022 video from Balkhash to a Soyuz launch from Baikonur. No launch has been matched to this one. The only Soyuz launch from Baikonur that month, Progress MS-19 on 15 February, lifted off in mid-morning Karaganda time.

Why it sits where it does

The clip grades L0: a single record that names nobody who filmed or saw it, so there is no identified witness. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What glowed near Karaganda is not resolved here.
