The Laketi Mission Globe

At 19:35 on 18 June 1954 a luminous globe came out of the north over the Laketi Mission in the Middle Congo and stopped dead. It rose and dropped and gyrated for fifteen minutes before it shot back over the horizon, the region's Catholic bishop reported. His account reached the CIA as a Lisbon newspaper item that it collected in a foreign-press digest. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over the mission.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Laketi Mission Globe is a reported UAP case in Lékéti (the record's 'Laketi Mission'), Likouala-Mossaka region, Middle Congo (French Equatorial Africa), Republic of the Congo, 18 June 1954, 19:35.
  • Monsignor Verhille, Apostolic Vicar of Fort Rousset, reported that a luminous globe stopped over the Laketi Mission, rose and dropped, gyrated and seemed to shake for fifteen minutes.
  • Through binoculars, the report says, the globe showed a dark mass at its centre with rays of light of unequal length coming out of it by turns.
  • An engine-like sound heard until the globe stopped fell silent at the same moment, according to the account.
  • The story reached the CIA as a Lisbon newspaper item it collected in a foreign-press digest, not as a CIA investigation.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The globe came from the north towards the Laketi Mission and then stopped in mid-air. It rose and dropped, stopped again, gyrated and seemed to shake. A sound like an aeroplane engine had been audible until that moment, and it stopped too. Through binoculars the object showed a dark mass at its centre with rays of light of unequal length coming out of it by turns. For fifteen minutes it went through its rising, falling and steadying movements. Then it shot back over the northern horizon. The witness was Monsignor Verhille, Apostolic Vicar of Fort Rousset, and he said others saw it with him.

What is on the record

The source is a foreign press report the CIA collected, not a CIA investigation. The Agency's report 00-W-30984, "Sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects", was distributed on 25 October 1954 and stamped "unevaluated information". It digests newspaper items from Norway to Southern Rhodesia. The Laketi paragraph had passed through three hands before it got there. Verhille told the Brazzaville paper La Semaine de l'AEF. An ANI dispatch from Brazzaville on 19 July relayed his account and Lisbon's Diário da Manhã printed it on 21 July. The archive holds two scans of the same report.

The typescript spells the bishop "Verbille". Émile Verhille was named the first Apostolic Vicar of Fort-Rousset (now Owando) in 1951, according to his Wikipedia and Catholic-Hierarchy entries. The Spiritan archives hold reports from a mission at Lékéty. The pin sits at the village of Lékéti in Cuvette department, and that identification is ours. The other witnesses are not named and no account outside this digest was found. The record offers no explanation.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. Two scans of one CIA press digest carry it, and they count as one source. That digest names one witness, Monsignor Verhille, but it is a newspaper relay the CIA collected rather than a primary government paper, so the name does not lift the case to the document tier. No independent testimony sits beside it in the archive. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What hung over the mission that evening is not resolved here.
