AEC Guards and the Lights East of Los Alamos

Between 21:13 and 22:05 on 3 May 1949 Atomic Energy Commission security inspectors on duty at two guard stations in Los Alamos, New Mexico, saw a series of bright, silent lights cross low in the eastern sky from south to north, one of them red and one that seemed to hover. The Air Force filed the reports and no evaluation is legible in the folder. This is the record of what the guards reported, not a verdict on what crossed the sky east of Los Alamos.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • AEC Guards and the Lights East of Los Alamos is a reported UAP case in Stations 310 and 340, Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, 3 May 1949, 21:13-22:05 local.
  • Atomic Energy Commission security inspectors at Los Alamos reported bright, silent lights crossing the eastern sky from south to north at intervals between 21:13 and 22:05 on 3 May 1949.
  • One light was red, and at 21:43 one appeared to hover for about three seconds before moving north, according to the report.
  • Each light was in sight for two to ten seconds and was the size of a ball-park light or an aircraft landing light.
  • No evaluation is legible in the Project Blue Book folder.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 3 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-12; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The Atomic Energy Commission's security inspectors at Los Alamos were on duty at Stations 310 and 340 on the night of 3 May 1949. At 21:13 one of them saw a self-luminous light about 10 to 15 degrees above the eastern horizon. It moved from south to north at high speed. More followed at 21:26, between 21:40 and 21:43, and at 22:05. Each time there was a single light, in sight for two to ten seconds and making no sound.

Most were white and about the size of a ball-park light or an aircraft landing light. The one at 21:40 was red. At 21:43 one appeared to hover for about three seconds before it moved on to the north.

Three of the men are named in the file: Inspectors William D. Wilson and John C. Cosney and Sgt. Elwood E. Obert at Station 340.

What is on the record

The reports sit in Project Blue Book's 1949 files as incident 365. The original report numbered it 358. NICAP's listing ties the night to Air Force Office of Special Investigations cases 59, 60 and 61.

These were separate, brief sightings by different men across the best part of an hour. The archive's machine summary ran the times together as though one object had been watched from 21:13 to 22:05. That was wrong. The folder's evaluation, if it has one, is not legible in the scanned text.

The night falls within the 1949 run of light and fireball reports around Los Alamos. The archive has a separate page for the green fireball seen there in 1948. Nothing in this file links the 3 May lights to that series beyond place and time.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD: a released government record names who saw it. Wilson, Cosney and Obert, all AEC security men on duty, are the witnesses it identifies. Nothing beyond their reports describes the night in the archive. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. What crossed the eastern sky that night is not resolved here.
