The Pilot Used as a Microphone

On 21 June 1976 a 23-year-old student pilot on a solo practice flight near Mexico City vanished from radar and turned up over Acapulco, where a metallic voice spoke through him on the radio and told the tower humanity is not alone. Every account traces to the tower audio and the controller's later testimony. This is the record of what was heard on the radio, not a verdict on who was speaking.

"We are using the pilot as a microphone." That is what the voice told the control tower at Acapulco on 21 June 1976. The pilot was Rafael Pacheco Pérez, a 23-year-old student flying a Cessna 150 registered XB-ZOX on a solo practice flight from a flying school near Mexico City. He dropped off radar. Then an echo appeared near Acapulco making turns, and a metallic voice came over his radio. It said it came from another world and that humanity is not alone in the universe. In the archive's tellings the beings held the pilot in a hypnotic state for close to an hour and then let him land at Acapulco.

The controller on duty says the report was stamped confidential and that he was told not to discuss it. Pacheco Pérez was examined medically and never flew again.

What is on the record

Four claimants are resolved: Rafael Pacheco Pérez, Carlos de Crecci, Captain Ortiz Lara and Fernando Acosta. Mexican press accounts name the controller as Carlos de Kretschy, and the transcripts' versions of his name are mishearings of it. Ortiz Lara and Acosta come from one telling only.

The archive's tellings place the event off the Acapulco coast and the departure at Texcoco. Mexican press accounts give the departure area as Chimalhuacán and the school as the Escuela de Aviación de México. One telling adds that he flew three hundred kilometres off course while unconscious, that the voice spoke for about forty minutes in Spanish and English, and that the plane burned no fuel. Those details are the telling's own. Another says his licence was suspended.

Several Mexican outlets retell the case, but every one of them goes back to the tower audio and to de Kretschy's later testimony. No 1976 press report or aviation-authority document has been located. No explanation has been published.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3 on four resolved claimants, with the pilot and the controller at its centre. The public record is a recording and one controller's memory of it. Who or what spoke through the radio over Acapulco is not resolved here.
