On the evening of 7 November 1990 a guest in the rooftop pool of the Place Bonaventure hotel in downtown Montréal noticed something overhead. Over the next three hours a lifeguard, hotel security, city police, the RCMP and reporters came up to look with her. This is the record of what was reported that night, not a verdict on what was over the city.

It began around 7.20 p.m. with a tourist in the hotel's rooftop pool. What she saw brought up a lifeguard, then security, then police officers, then the RCMP and then reporters. The witness list grew through the evening rather than arriving all at once. The accounts describe a large round or egg-shaped object carrying multiple lights and holding position silently for close to three hours. Photographs were taken. Radar checks and enquiries with the military came back negative. The investigators Bernard Guenette and Haines concluded afterwards that a real and highly unusual silent object had been present. One estimate reported in the account puts the object at over 6,000 feet across, which is the source's figure and not the archive's.
What is on the record
The archive resolves seven claimants from a single video on a single reporting channel. No documents sit in the file. The photographs are referred to but are not held here, and the investigators' report is described rather than filed, so the two things that could be examined are both absent from the archive's own holdings.
The claimant list also mixes roles. Guenette appears on it, and he is one of the investigators rather than a pool-side witness. The negative radar is a real gap and belongs in the reading of this case: something reported as very large, low and stationary for three hours over a major city left no instrument trace in the checks that were made. An aurora explanation was raised at the time and dismissed by the investigators. Nothing in the file settles it either way.
