Pan Am Pilots and Eight Glowing Discs over Chesapeake Bay

On the evening of 14 July 1952 two Pan American pilots flying a DC-4 over Chesapeake Bay watched six glowing discs "like red hot irons" pass below them, turn sharply and climb as two more joined them. Nash told the press they believed the objects came from "some extra-terrestrial source", and Project Blue Book carried the case as Unknown. This is the record of what two airline pilots reported, not a verdict on what crossed the bay.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • Pan Am Pilots and Eight Glowing Discs over Chesapeake Bay is a reported UAP case in Over Chesapeake Bay, 20-25 miles north of Norfolk, near Newport News, Virginia, USA, 14 July 1952, about 20:12 EST (21:12 EDT).
  • Pan American pilots William B. Nash and William H. Fortenberry reported six glowing objects "like red hot irons" passing beneath their DC-4 over Chesapeake Bay on 14 July 1952, joined by two more.
  • According to the wire story, the objects made a sharp turn of about 150 degrees and their lights went out one after another; the pilots judged them about 100 feet across.
  • Nash told the press he and Fortenberry believed they came from "some extra-terrestrial source".
  • The record in the archive is a United Press wire story kept in the FBI's flying-disc file; Project Blue Book carried the case as Unknown.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 2 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-12; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

William B. Nash was flying the Pan American DC-4 as first officer, with William H. Fortenberry beside him as second officer. At about 20:12 Eastern Standard Time on 14 July 1952 they were over Chesapeake Bay, 20 to 25 miles north of Norfolk near Newport News. Six glowing objects came into view below them. Nash said they looked "like red hot irons" and had definite outlines. Near the point beneath the airliner they made a sharp turn of about 150 degrees to the west. As the six climbed, two identical objects joined them to make eight. Then the lights of all eight went out one after another. Working from the difference in height, the pilots judged each object about 100 feet across.

What is on the record

The record in the archive is thinner than the case's fame. It is a United Press wire story filed from Miami in July 1952 and clipped into the FBI's flying-disc file 62-HQ-83894. It is press copy and not an FBI or Air Force interview. In it Nash says he and Fortenberry believed the objects came from "some extra-terrestrial source". Pan Am's acting operations manager in Miami told the wire they were "obviously not figments of their imagination". The FBI file adds no evaluation of its own.

Project Blue Book carried the sighting as Unknown. NICAP's list gives it as Blue Book case 1444, and Berliner's list of Blue Book unknowns includes it. Hatch, Eberhart and Johnson all record it. Later sceptics offered ordinary answers. Menzel proposed ground lights seen through haze, and Campbell proposed a mirage of Venus. The archive's own machine summary had eight objects joined by two more. The wire story and NICAP both give six at first and eight in all.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Both names, Nash and Fortenberry, come from the wire copy the FBI kept. The archive has no interview with either man, only the wire copy. A government folder lifts the grade without settling the question. What passed beneath the DC-4 is not resolved here.
