The Orange Pilots' Sphere

On the morning of 15 June 1951 two French Air Force fighter pilots climbing out of the Orange-Caritat air base saw a round, silver, very bright object hanging still in the sky, chased it at full climb for about six minutes and lost it as a point on the horizon. GEIPAN, the French space agency's UAP investigation unit, holds the case as class D, investigated and unexplained. This is the record of what two pilots reported, not a verdict on what they chased.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Orange Pilots' Sphere is a reported UAP case in Orange, Vaucluse, France, 15 June 1951.
  • Two French Air Force fighter pilots climbing out of Orange-Caritat in Vampire jets reported a round, silver, very bright object hanging motionless, apparently south of the Pelvoux massif at about their own altitude.
  • When they turned towards it, their signed reports say, it tipped over, became elliptical and climbed away; they chased it to 16,000 feet at 250 knots or more and lost it as a point after about six minutes.
  • Their base commander questioned both pilots about an hour and a half later and wrote that the object was faster than their Vampires.
  • GEIPAN weighed a distant stratospheric balloon and set it aside because one pilot saw the object draw rapidly away as he tried to close on it.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 2 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

At 11:23 local time on 15 June 1951 a patrol of Vampire jets from the 5e Escadre de Chasse took off from Orange-Caritat on a training flight. A few minutes later, at 6,000 feet north of the field, the sergent-chef saw something to his right and a little above him. It was round, silver and very bright, and it did not move. He called it in to his lieutenant, who took off his sunglasses and found it dazzling. At 10,000 feet the lieutenant felt level with it. It seemed to sit south of the Pelvoux massif, in line with the snow-covered summits. The two jets turned towards it on a heading of 080 and watched it grow. Then it seemed to tip over, turned elliptical and began to climb away at a shallow angle. They followed it to 16,000 feet at no less than 250 knots. It shrank to a point and was lost after about six minutes, with the lieutenant over Serres in the Hautes-Alpes.

What is on the record

GEIPAN's file holds both pilots' signed accounts, written that day, and the covering report of the colonel commanding Base aérienne 115. He had questioned both men about an hour and a half after the sighting and found their accounts matched. The object, he wrote, was faster than their Vampires in level flight or in the climb. He also asked the Hautes-Alpes gendarmerie whether anyone on the ground had seen it. No answer is in the file. Every name is blanked in GEIPAN's copy.

GEIPAN weighed a stratospheric balloon seen from far off, and some of the description fits one. It set that aside because one pilot saw the object draw rapidly away as he tried to close on it. Class D means GEIPAN investigated and could not explain it. Its summary gives the take-off as 11:30; the pilots' own reports say 11:23.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD. A released government record identifies who saw it: two pilots of Escadron de Chasse I/5 "Vendée" at Base aérienne 115, a lieutenant and a sergent-chef, reporting to their commander. No independent testimony sits beside that record. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. What hung south of the Pelvoux that morning is not resolved here.
