A 'Giant Firecracker' over North-east Philadelphia

Late on 6 August 1947 a former bomber pilot and a retired policeman in north-east Philadelphia watched a bluish-white flaming object streak south-west, while ten miles away a woman saw a white object rush south with a buzzing sound. The Army Air Forces check-lists found the accounts roughly matched and the observers reliable, and entered no conclusion. This is the record of what four people reported, not a verdict on what crossed Philadelphia.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • A 'Giant Firecracker' over North-east Philadelphia is a reported UAP case in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Oxford Circle, north-east Philadelphia, and a second street about 10 miles away), USA, 6 August 1947, about 22:30-22:45.
  • Retired police officer John J. Kelley described "a giant firecracker" with a "fiery trail for about 100 ft" over north-east Philadelphia late on 6 August 1947.
  • Former B-24 pilot John Snyder reported a bluish-white flaming object crossing north-east to south-west at an estimated 400-500 mph without losing height, with a moderate hissing sound.
  • About ten miles away Eleanor Naddle reported a large white object rushing south followed by a slight buzzing, which her companion Cecelia Fine also heard.
  • The Army Air Forces check-lists (Incidents 69 and 70) note the accounts "roughly correspond" and that all observers "seemed reliable", but enter no conclusion.
  • A bright meteor is an obvious ordinary candidate that the record itself does not raise.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 2 distinct sources, 2 corroborating primary documents and 4 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-12; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

At about 22:45 on 6 August 1947 John Snyder was sitting on his steps in north-east Philadelphia, with his neighbours the Kellys out on theirs. He sold insurance and had once flown B-24s. He saw an object throwing out a bluish-white flame pass quickly from north-east to south-west. From his Army Air Corps experience he put its speed at 400 to 500 miles an hour. It held its height and made a moderate hissing sound. Behind it a smoke or condensation trail lasted about two seconds.

His neighbour John J. Kelley was a retired police officer. He saw something like "a giant firecracker" with a "fiery trail for about 100 ft". To him it was silent and gone south in a split second. Because it never lost altitude he was sure it was no falling star.

About ten miles away, between 22:30 and 22:45, Eleanor Naddle was sitting on her steps with Cecelia Fine. She saw a large white object travel very fast to the south and leave a thin greyish streak of smoke. A slight buzzing followed it. Fine was facing the other way and saw only her companion's frightened face, but she heard the buzzing too.

What is on the record

The Army Air Forces logged the two places as Incidents 69 and 70 in check-lists the Department of War released in 2026; Kelley has his own sheet, 70A. A note in the file says the observations "roughly correspond" and that all the observers "seemed reliable". No conclusion is entered on any of them. The FBI's flying-disc file 62-HQ-83894 carries the same four names. Kelley's surname is spelt "Kelley" on his check-list and "Kelly" in the narratives.

A bright meteor is the obvious ordinary candidate for a flaming object seen for a second or two from two places ten miles apart. The record does not raise it, and Kelley's reason for ruling out a falling star was his own judgement on the night. Hatch, Johnson and Overmeire all list the sighting.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — released government records name who saw it. Snyder, Kelley and Naddle saw the object; Fine is named but only heard it. The archive holds no testimony from outside the check-lists. That grade speaks to the paper trail, not to what crossed the sky. What passed over north-east Philadelphia that night is not resolved here.
