Two Cigars over Columbus

On the morning of 8 July 1948 a Columbus, Ohio, housewife watched two silver cigar-shaped objects bob through the sky at about 3,000 feet for four minutes, some of it through binoculars. Air Force investigators found two P-80 jets on a speed check over the city at the time and judged it "highly possible" she had seen them from behind. This is the record of what she reported and how it was explained, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • Two Cigars over Columbus is a reported UAP case in Columbus, Ohio (objects first seen to the east, heading towards Port Columbus), United States, 8 July 1948, 09:20.
  • A Columbus housewife reported two silver cigar-shaped objects that "seemed to bob up and down" at about 3,000 feet for four minutes, heading towards Port Columbus.
  • Through binoculars, she told investigators, "I couldn't make it out plain. It was like a dark blot."
  • Air Force investigators found two P-80 jets on a speed check over Columbus at the time and judged it "highly possible" she had seen them from a three-quarter rear view.
  • J. Allen Hynek's evaluation in the Blue Book file calls the objects aircraft and the bobbing a "seeing" effect of the air.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

They were silver and shaped "very much like a cigar", blunt at the front and tapering to a point behind. Wilda Zittek saw them in Columbus, Ohio, at 09:20 on 8 July 1948. The sun was bright and there was no cloud near them. The two objects "seemed to bob up and down rather than pursuing a set and steady course", heading north-east towards Port Columbus and then north. She spent two minutes finding a pair of M-3 binoculars and watched through them for two minutes more. There was no sound and no exhaust trail.

What is on the record

Project SIGN filed the report as Incident 138, and the file is among the incident summaries the Department of War released in May 2026. It holds a summary sheet, a report passed on by the Counter Intelligence Corps in Columbus and an Air Materiel Command interrogation of 12 July. Asked again, she called the bobbing "a smooth undulating movement 'like something going through air currents'". She added: "I couldn't make it out plain. It was like a dark blot."

The investigator tested her on passing aircraft. She was good on direction and movement but "poor for distance and altitude". Patterson Field reported two P-80 jets in the air at the time. The pilot of one, Captain Darnell, said he was flying in trail of Lieutenant Collins over Columbus on a calibrated speed check. The interrogation calls it "highly possible" that she saw those jets from a three-quarter rear view, which would explain the "blunt nose, obscure tail, and apparent lack of wings". The Blue Book copy of the file adds J. Allen Hynek's view that the objects were aircraft and the bobbing a "seeing" effect of the air.

A radio report the next morning spoke of five members of one family seeing objects like pie pans over Port Columbus on 7 July. They had not been interviewed when the report was filed.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Zittek is the only witness to this sighting, and no independent testimony sits beside the Air Force file in the archive. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. The file's own answer is two jets, and nothing on record contradicts it. Whether that is what she saw is not resolved here.
