Rendlesham Forest

RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge were operated by the U.S. Air Force in December 1980, at the height of the Cold War. Over three nights, security personnel reported unexplained lights in Rendlesham Forest, which lies between the two bases. The archive resolves thirty-one named claimants across three channels and twenty videos.

What was documented at the time

On the first night, security police went into the forest after seeing lights descend, and reported a metallic object among the trees. The next day, three depressions were found on the ground where it had been reported. On a later night, deputy base commander Colonel Charles Halt led a team back into the forest with a radiation meter and a tape recorder. The recording captures the team's real-time observations, bearings and radiation readings as they happened.

Halt summarised the events in a memo dated 13 January 1981, headed "Unexplained Lights," addressed to the UK Ministry of Defence. The file holds forty primary government documents in total, including that memo, most of them Ministry of Defence UFO files released through the UK National Archives. It is the reason this case reaches the top of the ladder: officer testimony plus primary military documents describing the same event.

What remains contested

The documented core of the case is narrow: lights seen descending, ground depressions, and radiation readings logged by officers in real time. The far more detailed accounts in the archive — humanoid figures, telepathic contact, missing time, a confrontation involving the base commander — come from tellings recorded well after the event. The record does not reconcile a sparse contemporaneous account with a set of much richer later retellings.

What is not in dispute is that trained military personnel at a nuclear-capable installation documented something they could not identify, in writing and on tape, as it happened.
