The Zuiderzee Foo Fighter

Returning from a bombing run over the Ruhr in 1942, a Wellington crew reported an object the apparent size of the moon closing from behind. Gunners fired into it and the tracer rounds went in without effect. This is the record of what the crew reported, not a verdict on what followed them over the Zuiderzee.

The aircraft was a Wellington returning from the Ruhr in June 1942, and the first man to see it was the rear gunner. What he reported closing from behind was not a light in the distance but something with apparent size, described as nearly as large as the moon and shining.

What is on the record

Three tellings on a single channel, four claimants recorded as the pilot Roman Sobiński and the crew positions, and no documents. The grade is testimony.

All three tellings agree on the detail that makes this account remarkable, which is what happened when the gunners engaged. Tracer rounds were seen to enter the object. They did not ricochet. They produced no visible effect and they did not fall away. The object then moved to the port side at speed, was fired on again, and departed at forty-five degrees into the stars.

This belongs to the wider foo fighter phenomenon of the Second World War, where aircrew on all sides reported objects pacing their aircraft. Those reports are numerous, they reached official study at the time, and they remain unexplained as a class. That context is worth stating precisely because it is easy to overstate: a well-known phenomenon does not corroborate any individual account of it.

Three tellings through one channel is thinner corroboration than the count suggests, and the archive has no wartime paperwork for this sortie.

Why it sits where it does

L3 on multiple tellings and a named crew, all reaching the archive through a single channel. What absorbed the tracer over the Zuiderzee is not resolved here.
