The Trans-en-Provence Landing

On 8 January 1981, a farmer at Trans-en-Provence in the Var said a craft descended into his garden, sat for less than a minute, and lifted away. France's official UFO study logged the case and analysed the ground it left behind. This is the record of what was reported and examined, not a verdict on what landed in the garden.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Trans-en-Provence Landing is a reported UAP case in France, 8 January 1981.
  • The record describes physical traces on the ground, a landed craft, electromagnetic effects and a silent craft.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · DOC-CORROBORATED — the testimony is corroborated by primary government documents, the top of our scale.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Renato Nicolaï farmed at Trans-en-Provence in the Var. He placed the event at around five in the afternoon on 8 January 1981. By his account a craft descended and landed roughly thirty feet away in his garden, remained for perhaps thirty or forty seconds, and took off. He described it as silent. What sets this case apart from a lone sighting is what happened next. The site was examined, and the analysis reported soil compression and biochemical damage to the plants consistent with microwave heating. The effect was strongest at the trace and eased with distance, and the vegetation was said to have recovered to normal about two years later.

What is on the record

This case is carried by documents as much as by testimony, and its evidence grade is an official record. The file includes government primary material from the GEIPAN case database run by the French space agency CNES, the state body that logs and studies such reports. The directly relevant entry is GEIPAN 1027, the Trans-en-Provence file dated 8 January 1981. Two further GEIPAN records attached here are neighbouring cases from the previous year, at Aix-en-Provence and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in March 1980. They sit in the same corroboration set but are separate incidents, and should be read as context rather than as accounts of this landing. A further item, a defence-oriented paper on UAP, is indexed as reporting rather than primary.

The archive resolves a single named claimant, Nicolaï, from one reporting channel. The strength of the entry is the official study and the physical analysis of the ground, not the number of witnesses.

Why it sits where it does

The case grades L4, the archive's document-corroborated tier, because a government agency's own records carry it rather than retellings alone. It records a brief reported landing that a state body logged and whose trace it analysed. What set down in the garden is not resolved here.
