The Retrograde Satellite

In 1961 Jacques Vallée was part of a satellite-tracking team at the Paris Observatory, and he says the team recorded a bright unknown object in a retrograde orbit before a superior erased or destroyed the tracking tape. The story comes from Vallée alone. This is the record of what he tells, not a verdict on what the team tracked.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Retrograde Satellite is a reported UAP case in Paris Observatory, France, France, 1961.
  • Jacques Vallée says his satellite-tracking team at the Paris Observatory recorded a bright unknown object in a retrograde orbit in 1961.
  • Vallée says a superior at the Paris Observatory erased or destroyed the 1961 tracking tape, and the data was gone.
  • A video telling names the Paris Observatory superior as Paul Muller and says he confiscated the tape, a name that comes from Vallée's own later writing.
  • No source independent of Jacques Vallée confirms that the 1961 retrograde object was recorded or that the tape was destroyed.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 2 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The object was very bright and it was travelling the wrong way. Jacques Vallée says that in 1961 his satellite-tracking team at the Paris Observatory recorded an unidentified object in a retrograde orbit. In the telling of the story, that was an orbit no launcher of the time could have reached. Then, he says, a superior erased or destroyed the tracking tape, and the data was gone.

The archive's telling names that superior as Paul Muller and says he confiscated the tape before destroying it. It also says Vallée's colleagues observed the object with him.

What is on the record

Everything here comes back to one man. Vallée's account is repeated in a public encyclopedia summary that gives no citation for it, and no other source confirms that the object was recorded or that the tape was destroyed. No official record and no explanation are on file.

The superior's name has the same source. The encyclopedia summary names no one, and Paul Muller comes from Vallée's own later writing.

The archive's row also carries a precise date of 11 July 1961. The outside record gives only the year, and the page uses the year.

The archive lists two claimants, Vallée and his Paris Observatory colleagues. Only the first has spoken. The colleagues are an unnamed group who reach the archive through Vallée's story, and none has given an account of their own.

Why it sits where it does

On paper this is an L3 case, the tier for several claimants describing one connected event. That overstates it. The file is a single video and one man's memory of a tape that no longer exists. His name gives the story its reach. It does not give it a second source. What the Paris team tracked in 1961 is not resolved here.
