The Travis Walton Abduction

On 5 November 1975, a seven-man logging crew was driving out of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest near Heber, Arizona, when — by their account — they stopped at a glowing object hovering above a clearing. Travis Walton left the truck, and the crew reported seeing him struck by a beam of light and thrown backward. The others fled. When they returned, he was gone.

What the crew reported

Walton was missing for five days. Search parties of up to fifty-five men combed the area and found radiation readings at the site but no trace of him. The six remaining crewmates — including foreman Mike Rogers and Duane Walton — described the same encounter, and several submitted to polygraph examinations, which examiners reported they passed. Walton reappeared five days later and later described fragmentary recollections of a craft interior.

What distinguishes this case in the archive is the number of witnesses to the event itself: six independent people reporting the same beam and the same vanishing, before any settled story could form. That is separate from Walton's own account of the missing days, which — like most such recollections — was elaborated later and is weighted differently.

Where the record stands

The case has been contested for decades. Critics have questioned the polygraph methods and the crew's circumstances; supporters point to the consistency of six accounts given separately and tested under polygraph. Our archive grades it on the independent multi-witness testimony to the event, not on the disputed abduction narrative.

The record does not resolve what happened during the five days. It does hold that a work crew reported, consistently and under scrutiny, watching a colleague felled by a light and disappear.
