A B-47 Instructor and the Hovering Light over Wichita

On the evening of 12 November 1952 a B-47 instructor with more than 5,000 hours, watching his pilots shoot landings at Wichita, Kansas, saw a blue-white light with an orange-red tail stop, reverse and hover north of the city before climbing away. Two weather balloons carrying flashlights had gone up from the base that evening. The reporting officer judged they could explain the path but not the colour, size or hovering. This is the record of what three airmen reported, not a verdict on what hung north of Wichita.

Major R. L. Wallander commanded the B-47 Transition Section of the 3520th Flying Training Squadron and had more than 5,000 hours as a pilot. At 20:25 CST on 12 November 1952 he was standing near the Kansas National Guard hangar at Wichita Municipal Airport while his pilots shot landings in a B-47. He saw an elliptical blue-white light with an orange-red glow trailing behind it. It moved erratically at high speed, stopped, reversed and hovered. For about two minutes it stayed motionless north of Wichita, and then it climbed away to the north. A/3C Dewey J. Phipps saw an orange glow move in jerky upward sweeps with pauses, the glow streaming behind like a comet's tail. Capt. A. G. Belleman was called out for the last phase and saw an orange light rising north at great speed. They watched for five to seven minutes. It made no sound and was faster than a B-47.

What is on the record

The Air Intelligence Information Report from the 3520th sits in a Project Blue Book folder indexed as Washington, D.C. (Unknown #2253, 30 November 1952). Major John J. Ford found that two weather balloons carrying flashlights had been released on the base at about the time. He noted they could explain the path and the jerky motion but not the colour, the size or the hovering. He rated the report A-1 and drew no conclusion.

Berliner, NICAP and Johnson give 15 November, the date of the teletype, but the report itself establishes 12 November from 20:25 to 20:33 after correcting Wallander's watch. The first teletype misnamed Phipps as "A/2C Ernest Peebles". Berliner counts the case among the Blue Book Unknowns and NICAP lists it as Blue Book 2224.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The three identified are all airmen on one base, Wallander, Phipps and Belleman, and no witness from beyond the base appears in the archive. The balloons are the file's own candidate, weighed and found short by the officer who raised them. The grade reflects sourcing, not whether the report is true. What hovered north of Wichita is not resolved here.
