WHAT IT IS

Shuttle video of specks that sharply change direction. NASA attributes them to ice particles reacting to a thruster firing, though it is still widely circulated.

THE CASE FOR

Multiple objects appear to change direction sharply and in concert following a flash — geometry that, defenders argue, is awkward for drifting debris.

THE CASE AGAINST

NASA's account — ice particles near the camera reacting to a routine thruster firing — matches the telemetry timing, and close small particles perfectly mimic distant fast objects on video.

WHERE IT STANDS

Explained. A conventional identification is established in the record.
