The A70 Abduction

On the night of 17 August 1992 two men driving the A70 towards Tarbrax in South Lanarkshire said they passed under a disc hovering above the road and arrived more than two hours late. Hypnotic regression months later produced memories of beings examining them, and sceptics point to the regression itself. This is the record of what two men reported, not a verdict on what was over the road.

Under hypnosis months afterwards, Garry Wood and Colin Wright described being examined by beings both small and tall. What they remembered unaided was shorter. Around ten at night on 17 August 1992 they were driving from the outskirts of Edinburgh to the village of Tarbrax when they saw a large disc hanging about twenty feet above the A70. They drove under it and into a shimmering curtain of light. In the archive's telling everything went black and Wood found himself outside the car. They reached their destination at a quarter to one, more than two hours late.

The men reported it to the police at the time. The case is often called Scotland's first officially reported abduction, and the investigator Malcolm Robinson of SPI took it up.

What is on the record

Wood and Wright are the only two claimants, and both reach the archive through a single video. The archive's transcript spells the driver Gary Wood and the village Tar Brax. The public record has Garry Wood and Tarbrax, and this page uses those spellings.

Outside the archive the case is well known. A national newspaper and Scottish television have covered it, a book tells it and a film was made about it. That coverage confirms the date and the road and the outline of the story the men told. It does not add a third witness.

Two layers need keeping apart. The disc, the light and the lost time are what the men recalled without help. The beings and the medical experimentation came later and only through hypnotic regression. No official body has offered an explanation. Sceptics point to the regression as the likely source of the abduction memories, and the record holds nothing that settles the question either way.

Why it sits where it does

Two named people describing the same night is enough for L3, the tier for independent claimants to one connected event. They shared one car and one experience, so the grade counts two voices rather than two vantage points. No police paperwork reaches the archive. What the two men drove beneath on the A70 is not resolved here.
