The Green Triangle on the A62

At about 9.15 on the morning of 15 February 2011 a woman was driving the A62 from Agen towards Bordeaux. She saw an object she could not recognise. It was static and triangular with three rounded corners, fairly flat and greenish, somewhere between grey and green. She kept driving and the sighting lasted a few seconds.

What is on the record

GEIPAN is the unit of the French space agency CNES that investigates unidentified aerospace phenomena. Its file holds a gendarmerie statement, a statement sheet and a short set of investigation materials. The sheet logs a woman of about 50 under a cloudy sky with bright spells, looking west at something perhaps 100 metres away. She put its area at three or four square metres and heard nothing. GEIPAN rang her. She drives that stretch often and has never seen anything like it again.

The investigation materials are a map and three Street View captures of the motorway near the Aiguillon exit in Lot-et-Garonne. Handwritten notes put question marks beside clumps of mistletoe in a bare tree and beside an electricity pole. They read as roadside look-alikes being checked, though the file does not say what came of them.

GEIPAN's reasoning is candid. The account is fairly precise, but it is surprising that nobody else reported the object, which makes the case "étrange, mais peu consistant" (strange but of little consistency): one witness and no photograph or video. The hovering object resembles nothing known, it says, except perhaps a kite or a hang-glider, and either would be out of place there. It keeps the case in class D, which means it investigated and could not explain it.
