Three on the Screen

At dusk on 31 August 2020 a US Air Force attack squadron pilot on a surveillance mission over the Arabian Gulf tracked an object across the sensor screen, saw a second of the same size and shape overtake it at much higher speed, and at one point had three of them "moving amongst each other". The Department of War released the pilot's debrief under the wrong title, as Japan in 2023. This is the record of what the pilot reported, not a verdict on what was on the screen.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • Three on the Screen is a reported UAP case in Central Arabian Gulf, north of Qatar, 31 August 2020, dusk.
  • A 482nd Attack Squadron pilot reported that an object crossing the sensor screen "was surpassed by another object of same size and shape but much higher speed".
  • At one point, the pilot wrote, "there were three on the screen at the same time moving amongst each other".
  • The debrief puts the contact at 18,000 feet and ticks the box for "Apparent Propulsion".
  • The release titles the debrief "Japan, 2023", but the form itself is dated 31 August 2020 and its grid lies in the central Arabian Gulf.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 3 distinct sources, 3 corroborating primary documents and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The first object came right through the screen. "Saw the initial object fly through the screen and started tracking it," the pilot wrote. "Initial object was surpassed by another object of same size and shape but much higher speed. At one point during tracking the objects, there were three on the screen at the same time moving amongst each other." The form puts the contact at 18,000 feet and holding that height, and logs its direction and speed as "150/230" without a unit. Of the shape boxes the pilot ticked only "Other Shape". The box for "Apparent Propulsion" is ticked as well.

What is on the record

The record is a Range Fouler Debrief, a one-page standard form for reporting an intruder in controlled airspace. It was filed by a pilot of the 482nd Attack Squadron holding the rank O-2, for an ISR mission on 31 August 2020 at dusk. US Central Command approved it for release to AARO in March 2026 and it appeared as DOW-UAP-D42 on 8 May 2026 in the Department of War's first PURSUE batch. The release titles it "Range Fouler Debrief, Japan, 2023". The form says otherwise: its date is 08/31/20 and the surviving part of its grid, 39RWL2, lies in the central Arabian Gulf. The index's own date and place fields agree with the form. This page follows the form.

The release also holds two uploader-titled infrared clips dated 31 August, DOW-UAP-PR088 and PR089, from a US military platform in the Central Command area in 2020. In AARO's descriptions one "area of contrast" crosses the frame, a second arrives and is tracked, and then several enter and leave. That sequence resembles the pilot's account. AARO itself does not link the clips to the debrief, and they carry no time or grid. The pairing is the archive's inference. No explanation is offered.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The observer is an attack squadron pilot, identified by unit and rank with the name withheld. No independent testimony sits beside the debrief in the archive, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What was on the pilot's screen is not resolved here.
