The Ascension Island Light

During the recovery of missile test data near Ascension Island in June 1960, a steady light was reported coming from beneath the sea surface close to the data cassette. Project Blue Book recorded it as a flare, though the account states none was released. This is the record of what the recovery crew reported, not a verdict on what was under the water.

The setting is a missile test recovery operation in the South Atlantic near Ascension Island on 25 June 1960. A data cassette was in the water waiting to be picked up, and the people around it, in the air and in the sea, reported a steady white or yellow light coming from below the surface close to it.

What is on the record

One telling on one channel, five claimant entries covering the pilot, co-pilot, an RCA photographer, recovery divers and a test observer, and no documents. The grade is testimony.

The witness spread is the notable feature. These were people working a technical recovery with a specific job to do. They were positioned in different places, and the light is reported by aircrew and divers and a contractor photographer alike.

The disposition is the interesting part. Project Blue Book is recorded as classifying the sighting as a flare, while the account states that no flare was released during the operation. That is a direct conflict between an official explanation and the operational record as the witnesses describe it, and it is the reason the case is worth holding. What the archive cannot do is test it: the Blue Book card and the test range paperwork are not in our holdings, and without them the conflict stays a claim about a document rather than a reading of one.

The location is open ocean and is held at region level.

Why it sits where it does
