The Luminous Oval over Bahía Blanca (1962)

On 21 May 1962 many people in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, watched a strange luminous body hang over the city for several minutes before it left quickly, and a newspaper reporter drove to the Maldonado Canal to photograph it as it stopped and changed course. The account survives as Agence France-Presse wires that the CIA's Foreign Broadcast Information Service picked up. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over the city.

The object would not leave the city. A reporter for the local newspaper Nueva Provincia first saw it from the street. When it stayed put he drove to the Maldonado Canal and took several photographs there, one "the very instant the mysterious body stopped and changed its course". That, the wire says, was when it came closest to the ground. Another wire puts the most extraordinary sighting on 21 May, when "many people observed a strange luminous body suspended for several minutes over the city, and then saw it disappear quickly". A local photographer's two pictures showed "a luminous oval on the print".

What is on the record

The source is a single page of the FBIS Daily Report for Argentina, dated 25 May 1962. It carries two Spanish-language AFP items filed from Lima on 24 and 25 May. FBIS monitored and translated them; they are foreign press, not a CIA inquiry. The archive holds two scans of that one page. Both read 21 May for the sighting.

According to the wire, the Córdoba Astronomical Observatory was collecting reports from other parts of Argentina, where the thing had been seen "although not as clearly". The observatory asked the public to help decide whether it was a cluster of meteorites, part of an artificial satellite or something else. The page gives no answer.

Bahía Blanca's own press has since filled in names. En Línea Noticias (2021) says La Nueva Provincia's photographer Miguel Tohmé took two photos at about 7.30 in the evening on Monday 21 May, and one ran on the next day's front page. La Nueva's 2022 retrospective spells him Thomé and has him parking on calle Don Bosco rather than at the canal. The wire names nobody. Whether its "local photographer" and its "reporter" are the same man is not stated.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT: the archive holds two scans of the same FBIS page, and copies of one document count once. The witnesses are unnamed in the record and the source is a news wire, so no primary record carries an identified witness. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. The photographs belong to the newspaper and are not reproduced here. What hung over Bahía Blanca is not resolved here.
