The Aquamarine Object over Behshahr (1960)

On 17 July 1960 several people at Behshahr in northern Iran heard a sound like air rushing through a pipe, then saw a bright aquamarine object with a white and red tail pass low overhead, turn west and burn out over the horizon; one said it broke in two. A CIA field telegram reported it three days later. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what crossed the sky over Mazandaran.

They heard it before they saw it. The sound was of "variable pitch like air passing through tube or pipe". Then the object came over Behshahr from the south-east, heading north-west, "low and quite flat but heading downward". It was described as conical. It was "bright aquamarine-colored with white and red tail". After passing over the town it made a gradual turn west. All who saw it agreed that it seemed to burn out before it disappeared over the horizon. "One person who saw the object claims that it appeared to break in two." It was in view for an estimated fifteen seconds at least.

What is on the record

The source is a CIA Telegram Information Report, TDCS-3/444,215, headed "Unidentified flying object sighted at Behshahr". It gives the date of information as 17 July 1960 and was distributed on 20 July, marked routine and unevaluated. It fixes the place with coordinates, 36°46'N 53°34'E, which lie just north of the town in Mazandaran province near the Caspian shore. The hour is hard to read on every copy and appears to be 16.20 GMT, which would be local evening. The upper figure for how long it was in view cannot be read at all. The source, and the place and date the information was acquired, are blacked out. The archive holds two scans of the one telegram.

The witnesses are "several individuals", none of them named. The telegram offers no explanation and draws no conclusion. It records only what they saw and heard. We found no other account of the sighting.

Garbled machine readings of the town's name gave the archive a second label for this report. Both point to Behshahr in Iran, not Beyşehir in Turkey.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT: the archive holds two scans of the same telegram, and copies of one document count once. It is a primary CIA field report, but its witnesses are unnamed and its source is withheld, so the record carries no identified witness. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What crossed Behshahr that evening is not resolved here.
