The Twisted Roof Tiles

Before dawn on 4 September 1989 a sleepless man at Bertre in the Tarn saw a glowing, faceted object hanging over his own roof for about thirty seconds. Next day the tiles beneath it were browned and shifted, and the roofer who repaired them said they had been twisted clockwise. France's official UAP investigators could not explain it. This is the record of what was reported and found, not a verdict on what hung over the house.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Twisted Roof Tiles is a reported UAP case in Bertre, Tarn, France, 4 September 1989.
  • A man who could not sleep reported a faceted object shaped like a spinning top hanging motionless over his own roof, throwing a ten-metre square of light onto the field below.
  • After about thirty seconds it vanished all at once, with no sound and no smell.
  • Next day the roof tiles beneath it were browned and shifted, and the builder who repaired them said they had been twisted clockwise along three to five metres and the ridge had sagged.
  • SEPRA, GEIPAN's predecessor, took samples of the tiles and ruled out a helicopter, the Moon and a balloon, leaving deliberate invention or an unexplained phenomenon; the case is filed as unexplained.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 corroborating primary document.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

At about 4.30am on 4 September 1989 a man who could not sleep saw a strong glow through his window. He got up. Below him in a field of lucerne lay a bright square of light roughly ten metres across. The light came from an object hanging motionless over the roof of his own house. It was shaped like a spinning top with many facets. After about thirty seconds it vanished all at once, with no sound and no smell.

The next day he found the curved clay tiles browned where the object had hovered. They had also shifted and opened a channel for rain. The builder who repaired the roof confirmed that the tiles "étaient vrillées dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre sur 3 à 5 mètres de longueur" (had been twisted clockwise along three to five metres). The ridge had sagged at the same spot.

What is on the record

The source is GEIPAN's file, which the agency titles « Les Tuiles », the tiles. It holds the gendarmerie report (PV n°599), a press file, ten photographs and a short investigation report. That report was written in October 1989 by SEPRA, GEIPAN's predecessor at the French space agency. It describes the witness as a retired sales director aged 68, colour-blind but otherwise sound of sight, whose account stayed coherent across several tellings. His version there differs in detail. He walked out into the field, turned, and saw a light shaped like a gas bottle that went out within seconds. The gendarmes noted "traces de tuiles chauffées" (traces of heated tiles).

SEPRA ran a full inquiry on site, bringing in a helicopter, and took samples of the tiles and the moss on them. National and regional press, it says, got in the way. Its provisional conclusion ruled out a helicopter, the Moon and a balloon and left two possibilities: deliberate invention or an unexplained phenomenon. Only analysis of the samples could decide. The published report does not give those results. GEIPAN files the case in class D, meaning it investigated and could not explain it.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. GEIPAN withholds its witnesses' identities, including the roofer's, so the record carries no identified witness. A tier measures sourcing, not the quality of the investigation. What hung over the roof at Bertre is not resolved here.
