A Hub-cap Disc over a Silo near Boston, New York

At about 17:00 on 10 September 1949 three people filling a silo on a farm in the Town of Boston, near Hamburg, New York, watched a dull flat disc the size of a hub-cap at arm's length cross overhead from west to east in ten to fifteen seconds. Air Force special investigators checked the witnesses for Project Grudge and recorded no conclusion. This is the record of what three farm workers reported, not a verdict on what crossed the farm.

Joseph and Clara Panek were filling a silo on a farm in the Town of Boston, in Erie County near Hamburg, at about 17:00 on 10 September 1949. A crane operator was working with them. The three of them saw a dull, light-coloured disc pass overhead. At arm's length it was the size of an automobile hub-cap, and it was flat rather than ball-shaped. It crossed at about 45 degrees from due west to due east at an estimated 5,000 ft. It was very fast and in view for ten to fifteen seconds. There was no sound and no trail. Other farm workers refused to look and told them they were "seeing things".

What is on the record

The record is a report of 18 October 1949 by OSI District 22 at Griffiss AFB, made for Project Grudge. The investigator checked the witnesses' police and employment records. Local radar was not operating that day. No conclusion is legible in the file. The crane operator's name is redacted.

The report sits in the Project Blue Book folder labelled "Goose Bay, Labrador", which bundles several cases from September 1949. Its map reference does not fit the Town of Boston and would put the farm in Ontario, so this page uses the town. None of the six outside catalogues checked for the date lists it.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Only the Paneks, Joseph and Clara, are named; the third observer is redacted. Nothing outside the OSI report backs it in the archive. A grade like this weighs the paper, not the disc. What crossed the farm near Hamburg is not resolved here.
