The Orange Ball and the Howling Kennel

On New Year's night 1980 soldiers on duty near Compiègne saw a small orange ball of light appear three times in half an hour, always in the same place. Each time, the dogs in the base kennel howled. This is the record of what the soldiers reported, not a verdict on what lit the sky.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Orange Ball and the Howling Kennel is a reported UAP case in Margny-lès-Compiègne, Oise, France, 1 January 1980.
  • Soldiers on duty on New Year's night 1980 reported a small orange ball of light appearing three times in half an hour, always in the same place.
  • Each time it appeared, the account says, the dogs in the base kennel howled.
  • The soldiers were certain it was not light from an aeroplane or a helicopter, and no civilian saw it.
  • GEIPAN's file holds four statement sheets but names no base, no unit and no explanation tested; the phenomenon remains unexplained (class D).
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

On the night of 1 January 1980 several soldiers on duty saw a light in the sky three separate times. A small orange ball appeared suddenly at 23.16, again at 23.33 and once more at 23.46. An intense glow came with it. Each time it moved slowly and always along a horizontal path. At every appearance in that same spot the dogs in the base kennel "hurlent à la mort" (howled as if at a death). The object made no sound and left no smoke. The soldiers were certain it was not light from an aeroplane or a helicopter.

What is on the record

GEIPAN is the unit of the French space agency CNES that investigates unidentified aerospace phenomena. It publishes the case as COMPIEGNE (60) 1980 and files four statement sheets under Margny-lès-Compiègne, the commune facing Compiègne across the Oise. The sheets log four men, one of about 30 and three of about 20. One puts the ball five to ten kilometres away. Another gives its apparent size as an apple. Two sheets record a biological effect on witnesses, animals or plants.

The summary adds that no civilian saw it. That is where the published file stops. It holds no investigation report and no gendarmerie statement, and it names no base, no unit and no explanation that was tested and set aside. GEIPAN's own verdict is that the phenomenon "reste inexpliqué" (remains unexplained), and it keeps the case in class D. That class means it investigated and could not explain what was seen.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD. A released government record identifies who saw it: soldiers on duty at the base, four of whom gave statements. GEIPAN names none of them and does not name the base or the unit. No independent testimony sits beside that record, and the summary notes that no civilian saw it. The tier measures sourcing, not the soldiers' reliability or the inquiry's verdict. What lit the sky that night is not resolved here.
