The Constantine Smoke Trails (1954)
On 18 January 1954, a Constantine newspaper reported, an object trailing a double plume of white smoke circled Saint-Arnaud with a strange sound, a cigar with bluish trails circled Sétif and raced back, and a large luminous rectangle crossed Ouled Djellal for more than half an hour. The account survives as a translation in a CIA digest of foreign press reports, and the local weather station put its smoke trail down to a high aircraft. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over Algeria.
